Your chance to drive your own dog team through the stunning scenery of central France

Winter is fast approaching, so we thought it an excellent opportunity to tell you all about one of the unique activities in the Limousin that comes into its own, especially at this time of year. So, snuggle up cosy, and let us tell you all about the extraordinary adventures to be had at Huskin’ Creuse.

From the Wyndham Halcyon Retreat, a 30-minute drive through winding tree-lined lanes will bring you to the heart of Anzeme’s picturesque countryside, and it is here, tucked within an endless forest you will find Huskin’ Creuse; home to Julien, Fanny and their pack of 25 adorable Huskies.

How it began

Husky dog expert and park owner Julien spent his childhood with his parent’s beloved huskies, and it was his experience with his pets at home that inspired him to learn more about this beautiful breed.

Julien went on to spend three winters in snowy Quebec with a famous musher and his 70 dogs before intensively training for another 18 months to learn and perfect the art of dog sledging himself. Finally, in 2012 Julien decided to bring his joyful experience back to share with his home region of Creuse.

Meet the Team

In a blissful wooded area of 1 hectare, the team of huskies enjoy a happy and free life with Julien and Fanny. Huskies have been bred for generations to carry heavy loads and travel long distances and they love nothing more than being active and pulling sledges or carts. What makes the pack at Huskin’ Creuse so special is that it is made up entirely of dogs rescued from abandonment. This often happens when owners cannot keep up with the sporty lifestyle that this breed needs to thrive, sometimes resulting in Huskies destroying homes out of boredom or even running away.

At the park, you will find four breeds of husky; lively and speedy Siberian, strong and hungry Greenlandic, the cute and fluffy Samoyede and huge and powerful Malamute. With each dog in place on a team of 14, Julien can create a synchronised force of power able to pull a cart and passengers of up to a whopping 160kg! The dogs feed on a mixture of fresh meat and kibble to keep up their strength, and each has their unique personality and traits that we are sure you’ll love getting to know for yourself when you meet them.

Sledging without snow

The activities at Huskin’ Creuse have been adapted so they can be enjoyed outside the snowy climates where they originated. Roller carts, specially manufactured in France, are used in place of sledges, and the same training method seen during the summer months in Canada is put to use here in the Limousin. The Huskies are only scheduled for morning activities during the warmer summer months so that they can rest in the cool shade of the woods when the temperatures get too high.

The Activities

After an introduction and time to enjoy some cuddles with the pack, you’ll be able to choose from several fun activities:

The Cani Rando

Get further acquainted with your new canine friends with a hike on foot but with a difference; you’ll be harnessed at the waist to your own husky, who will lead the way.

The Cani Scooter

Hop on a scooter and work in synergy with one or two huskies as they pull you along an exciting trail.

The Cani Kart

Led by your guide, Julien, you’ll enjoy an invigorating cart ride expertly pulled by a team of 8-14 dogs. (Please note that for the dogs’ health, this activity is only available in cooler weather when the temperature is below 15 degrees). *Suitable for people with reduced mobility.

The Electric Scooter

If you want to give the dogs a time out, take a fun-filled ride on a solar-charged electric scooter amongst the beautiful woodland scenery.

Many of the activities can be modified for children, and last year, Huskin’ Creuse was proud to be awarded a label by the Disabled Sports Association of Creuse for offering fantastic activities to people with disabilities, so there are great options to suit everyone.
