Autumn is a special time of year for us at the Wyndham Halcyon Retreat. As the nights draw in and the trees of our arboretum magically transform from lush greens to magnificent shades of orange, red and gold, it’s a fantastic season to come and explore our untouched countryside and unique history.

On top of all that, Halloween is just around the corner, so if you are into all things spooky and mysterious, you’re in the right place for some spooktacular fun!

Check out our list of fun Halloween-themed activities to enjoy in the area that are bound to thrill kids and grownups alike!

Halloween Hike at Saint German Beaupre

Choose between two Halloween-themed organised hikes that start from the little hamlet of Saint Germain. Then, at the end of the walk, you’ll be treated to hot chocolate, mulled wine and sweets- fun for all ages. Children will be thrilled to spot all the surprise decorations along the route.

Labyrinth of Gueret

The Labyrinth of Gueret is one of Europe’s largest permanent plant mazes, and it goes all out to celebrate Halloween each year, with spooky decorations and monsters at every corner! There is even a night-time labyrinth to experience if you think you’re brave enough!

Chateau Pompadour

Halloween at the Chateau Pompadour is a surreal and glorious sight! After sundown, the castle comes to life with a dramatic sound and light show as pictures are projected across its façade. During the afternoon, there is entertainment, especially for little ones, including a show and face painting. In the evening, dare to stroll through the grounds for more chills and thrills, where you’ll discover things that might go bump in the night!

Aquarium of Limousin

The Aquarium in Limoges is a family favourite, especially at Halloween when spider webs, pumpkins, ghosts and other strange creatures adorn the place! There are puzzles to solve, treasure hunts, and even a sing-along with Gariguette, the aquarium mascot.

Limoges City Centre

In Limoges, Halloween-themed events and festivities have been growing in popularity each year. Today, hundreds of shops, bars and cafes enthusiastically decorate their premises and offer lots of spooky treats. The mini train that tours the city even gets dressed up for the occasion becoming a spooky ghost train, perfect for when your legs get tired! This Halloween, children can take part in an amazing workshop to explore the underground passages that tunnel beneath Limoges.

Masgot Village

Halloween entertainment at Masgot Village

Famed for the whimsical carvings of 19th-century stone mason Francois Michaud, Masgot is a great place to visit any time of year offering guided tours and lots of creative workshops. At Halloween, the association organise delightfully frightful events for all ages. This year, you can explore a huge haunted house, craft something at Frankenstein’s workshop or sit back and revel in the atmosphere while you watch shows from characters like “Dalpaz the Magician” or the two cheeky “Undertakers”.

Chateau Fougeret

Did you know that four castles on the list of “France’s most haunted” are in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region? Topping that list is Chateau Fougenet. For Halloween lovers wishing to take their scares to the next level, you can book an overnight stay and participate in supernatural workshops to experience the mysterious energies of this ancient building for yourself.

Chateau de Beaugency

The third and final castle on our list is a little further out, but we think worth the drive. One of the many grand Loire chateaux that had belonged to the same family for generations was finally opened to the public in 2014 as something wonderfully unique: a Digital Arts Centre. You’ll, in each room, find contemporary creations and swirling electronic installations that use projections, lights and sounds that create an immersive experience. Chateau de Beaugency is hosting an All Hallows’ Eve party on the 31st, with its theme being the colourful Mexican Day of the Dead. There will be face painting, piñatas and treats for children and your chance to participate in a semi-digital version of Cluedo in the castle. After dark, the courtyard will be lit with an exciting light show designed especially for the event.

Wishing you a Happy Halloween!
