Rocco (15) is a Noth local and has been fishing the Chateau lakes with his family since he was just four years old!
Last week, Rocco proudly caught this huge 4.5kg, 95cm Pike at our Étang d’argent. We later caught up with him to share his experiences and let us in on some top tips!
What a catch! Congratulations! Tell us about how you caught it! Was it difficult? Did you have to be very patient? What bait did you use?
I caught it casting, just 2 meters from the edge. Yes, I have to be very patient; sometimes, I can fish all night and catch nothing. I fish Pike and other carnivorous fish with small live fish on an amson or with lures.
How long ago did you first start fishing, and who taught you the basics?
I started fishing when I was four years old. I learned the basics with my mother but the majority from fishing alone.
Do you remember what your first catch was?
The first fish I caught was a roach, and then a few years later, I started fishing for Pike on my own for whole mornings and afternoons. I remember when I caught my first Pike. I was so happy I was shaking!
What fish are in the Etang d’argent?
Carp, Roach, Perch and Sun Perch
Which is your favourite species to catch?
I think it’s the big Perch fish because they are rarer, especially in this lake.
What has been your biggest catch?
The biggest Pike I ever caught was 95 cm and 4.5kg
The biggest Perch fish I ever caught was 40cm
Which methods do you like the best? Pole, fly, live bait etc.?
I prefer lure fishing as it is more fun, but for me, the best method is live bait fishing as I can fish with several rods at the same time so I can multiply my chances of catching a fish.
Do you have any fishing heroes, or is there anyone who has inspired you the most?
I like to watch the YouTube videos of “FISHTIQUE” and “TIM FISH”.
We think it’s fantastic that you are young and interested in recreational fishing! Do you think many local young people like to fish?
Yes, I think a lot of young people in the area like to fish but don’t show it too much. I have many friends who ask to fish with me.
Do you think it is something that is gaining or losing popularity with young people?
I think it’s something that’s gaining popularity but is becoming more modern – like, you have to respect the fish more and more. And I think it’s a good thing that it’s modernising.
What is your favourite aspect of the sport?
My favourite is when I’ve got the fish on the line and am fighting it.
What is one piece of advice you would give to other young people starting out fishing?
I advise them to be patient, not to want to have the best tools immediately and to learn little by little.
