If you’re looking for a day trip that combines lots of history, culture, and shopping, then we highly recommend putting Limoges on your holiday itinerary. This beautiful city is located just a short drive from the Wyndham Halcyon Retreat, making it the perfect destination for a day of exploring and discovery.
Jardin Botanique de l’Evêché
We think one of the most beautiful spots in Limoges is the Jardin Botanique, This stunning park located on the banks of the River Vienne is a popular spot for locals to relax and enjoy the outdoors. It’s a wonderful place to take a leisurely stroll and soak up the beautiful scenery giving you glorious views across the river. Growing since 1910, this garden boasts a variety of trees, flowers, and plants, as well as several fountains, a duck pond, and a children’s play area.
Église Saint-Michel-des-Lions
Another must-see attraction in Limoges is the Église Saint-Michel-des-Lions, a stunning church that dates back to the 14th century. The church is famous for its beautiful stained glass windows, which are considered to be some of the finest examples of stained glass art in France. Free tours are offered every day from 9am until 7pm.
Musee National Adrien Dubouché
Limoges is world famous for its porcelain, and no visit to the city is complete without a visit to the Musée National Adrien Dubouché. The museum houses a huge collection of porcelain, including pieces from the 18th century to the present day. You’ll enjoy learning all about porcelain production the history of the craft in Limoges.
Shopping and Dining
In Limoges, it’s easy to spend a day simply taking in the sights and sounds of the charming streets and squares. Be sure to explore the Quartier de la Boucherie, a historic neighbourhood filled with quaint shops and restaurants, and the Place de la Motte, a beautiful public square with a fountain and an impressive 19th-century town hall.
If you’re a foodie, you’ll definitely want to check out the covered market in Limoges, which is full of local specialities like foie gras, truffles, and of course, Limousin beef. And for a sweet treat, be sure to try the famous “bouchon de Saint-Yrieix”, a delicious pastry filled with almond cream and glazed with caramel.
