That’s why we’re thrilled to have launched a new series of blogs and articles celebrating all the amazing day trips available from the Wyndham Halcyon Retreat.
We are kicking off our new series by telling you all about one of our favourite day trip destinations: The beautiful village of Crozant.
Located just 30 minutes drive from the retreat, Crozant is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the region. The pretty village is nestled in the heart of the Creuse River valley and boasts stunning views of the surrounding hills and forests.
Château de Crozant
Full of history, the village is home to a beautiful 11th-century castle that was built by the powerful De Crozant family. This castle played an important role in the Hundred Years’ War and was the site of many battles between the French and English armies. Today, only the ruins remain, but you’ll be able to explore and imagine what life was like in medieval times.
If you happen to be visiting in August, you’ll be lucky to experience the village of Crozant really coming to life when it hosts an exciting Medieval Festival. Close to the castle ruins, volunteers get together to put on a fantastic event with music, parades, and medieval scenes.
Valley of the Painters
Crozant has a fantastic connection to the Impressionist art movement. In the late 19th century, many famous painters, including Claude Monet and Armand Guillaumin, flocked to the village to capture its stunning landscapes on canvas and the “School of Crozant” is renowned throughout the world. Today, you can follow in their footsteps by taking a scenic walk along the Impressionist trail, which leads you to many of the same spots that inspired these great artists.
Nature Trails
Crozant, of course, is known for its stunning natural beauty. The village is situated on a rocky promontory that overlooks the confluence of the Creuse and Sédelle rivers. The views from the top are absolutely breath-taking, and we think it’s the perfect spot for a family picnic or photo session.
If you’re feeling adventurous, be sure to take a walk down to the riverbank to explore the beautiful beaches and rock formations. The area is also popular with hikers and nature lovers, thanks to its many hiking trails and wildlife reserves.
So there you have it, – our first entry in the Wyndham Halcyon Retreat’s new series of day trip blogs, all about the stunning village of Crozant! With its rich history, breath-taking views, and strong artistic connections, it’s no wonder Crozant has become a must-visit destination for tourists and locals alike.
Whether you’re exploring the ruins of the Château de Crozant, following in the footsteps of Monet and other Impressionist painters, or just taking a leisurely stroll along the scenic nature trails, there’s something for everyone in this charming little village.
