Spring is well and truly underway in the Limousin region of France, and April is the time when many of the outdoor attractions and activities start opening up after the winter season. If you’re staying at the Wyndham Halcyon Retreat and looking for some more fun and adventure in the great outdoors, look no further than the Labyrinthe de Guéret, a giant outdoor maze located just a short drive away in the town of Guéret.
The Labyrinthe de Guéret is a unique and challenging attraction that offers a fun and engaging experience for both adults and children. Covering an area of more than 2 hectares, the maze is made up of more than 13,000 plants, including hornbeams and beeches, which grow over 2 meters tall. The maze is designed to be quite difficult to solve, so be prepared for a fair amount of walking! You can spend anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour trying to find your way to the centre and back out again.
Back in 1997, creating the Labyrinthe de Guéret was no small feat. The maze was designed using a computer program and marked out on the ground using ropes and stakes. Over several months, more than 13,000 hornbeam and beech trees were planted and carefully pruned to grow in the desired pattern. The trees took several years to grow tall enough to create the walls of the maze, and ongoing maintenance is required to keep them in good shape.
But the hard work has paid off – the Labyrinthe de Guéret is a popular attraction and has been enjoyed by thousands of visitors over the years. And with the maze design updated every year and new attractions added regularly, there’s always something new to discover.
After completing the maze, the adventure doesn’t have to end. There’s an array of exciting activities to enjoy, including solving puzzles in the Escape Room, testing your skills on the miniature golf course, and playing a game of giant chess. Follow the charming wooden stilted pathway to discover the beautiful flora and fauna of the former peat bog, or visit the mini farm and say hello to the friendly sheep and goats.
Then, when it’s time for a rest, head over to the café for drinks, snacks and ice creams or bring your own and enjoy the shade of the picnic area.
During the summer months, you can challenge yourself some more by solving the maze after dark and by torchlight!
The Labyrinthe de Guéret is definitely worth putting on your must-visit list during your stay at the Wyndham Halcyon Retreat. It’s a fun and challenging experience that’s perfect for families, couples, and groups of friends alike. Just be sure to bring your sense of adventure – and maybe a good map!
