A Fisherman’s Paradise: The Grande Cazine Lake

This magnificent pond caters to a variety of fishing experiences, including both day and night fishing for carp and predator species such as pike, perch. The lake provides excellent facilities for a comfortable fishing day, including an access pontoon for people with reduced mobility, free parking, and on-site sanitary amenities. Half-day, full-day, and even weekly fishing permits are available for purchase at the nearby La Sout Pêche store in La Souterraine or at the pond itself in Noth.

With its calm waters, the lake attracts both casual fishers and avid anglers hoping to land fish weighing up to an impressive 28 kilos. Baiting isn’t complicated either—corn and hemp are among the common choices, making this fishing experience both enjoyable and straightforward.

Embrace the Art of Tenkara Fishing

For those looking to elevate their fishing skills, The Grande Cazine offers something truly special. A dedicated Tenkara fishing guide is available to teach this minimalist and aesthetic technique, which has its roots in ancient Japanese tradition. The art of Tenkara, dating back centuries, emphasizes blending into the natural environment, moving in harmony with the water, and practising mindfulness as you cast. Ideal for beginners, this form of fishing brings a meditative and artistic approach to catching fish.

Fishing Tournaments and Conservation Efforts

Each year, The Grande Cazine plays host to numerous fishing tournaments, attracting participants from across the country. The most recent 72-hour competition was even broadcast on national television, showcasing the excitement and challenge of fishing in this unique location.

But The Grande Cazine isn’t just about sport fishing—it’s also a place where nature is carefully preserved. The Cazine stream connects the Grand and Petite Cazine ponds, creating a diverse ecosystem home to various aquatic species. While the northern and eastern shores are designated for fishing, the rest of the lake is under the stewardship of the Conservatoire d’Espaces Naturels. These protected areas focus on the conservation of aquatic fauna and flora, offering a biodiversity refuge that supports the local ecosystem.

A Natural Escape

Once you’ve finished fishing for the day, there’s no better way to unwind than by exploring the many nature trails surrounding The Grande Cazine. The scenic “De l’Eau et des Hommes” hiking trail loops around the lake, providing breathtaking viewpoints, hidden observation spots, and glimpses of ancient fords, fountains, and washhouses. This trail highlights the area’s rich cultural heritage and deep connection to the natural resource of water, offering a deeper appreciation for the environment that sustains life here.

Essential Information and Regulations

Fishing in France is regulated to protect aquatic ecosystems and ensure sustainable fishing practices. Anyone can fish in The Grande Cazine with a valid fishing permit, which can be easily obtained for a small fee at the Fishing Clubhouse near the lake or in the nearby village of La Souterraine. Be aware that fishing without a license can result in a hefty fine of up to €450.

Fishing is allowed year-round at The Grande Cazine, with one exception: pike fishing. This is only permitted from the last Saturday in April to the last Sunday in January. During the off-season, fishing with live bait, artificial fish, or any lure intended to catch pike is prohibited to allow the population to thrive.
